What is a Stable Door?
A stable door is a traditional style of door split into a top and bottom half, allowing each section to open independently. The name comes from its origins in farm stables, where the design allowed animals to stay inside while letting in light and fresh air. These doors are also known as Dutch doors, a style believed to have originated in the Netherlands.
Key Features:
- Versatile design: top and bottom halves open independently
- Classic cottage look: perfect for heritage or rural-style homes
- Optional double-glazed window: brings in extra light while maintaining security

Energy Efficiency
Our stable door frames are made from multi-chambered uPVC. This helps our doors retain warmth and keep colder air out. The door frame also features weatherseals on the inner frame and outer frame, helping eliminate draughts and further improving the overall thermal efficiency of the door.
Measurements
Built to the highest quality standards, with foundations to a depth of at least 650mm and a thick damp-proof membrane, steps, plastering, lighting and power points if you need them.
Security
Our composite stable doors combine traditional looks with modern security features, designed to keep your home safe. The lever-operated part of the stable door lock has a latch and deadbolt, engaged by the door handle. The lower leaf incorporates a hook bolt and another deadbolt.

Stable Doors FAQs
How much do stable doors cost?
The cost of a stable door will depend on things like its size, design, and materials, as well as colours and finishing details. You can get in touch with us to get an accurate quote for the cost of a new stable door.
Can a stable door open out?
A stable door can open outwards if desired, but it would depend on the specific design and manufacture of the door to allow this. As stable doors are often exterior doors, it’s usually more practical for them to open inwards.
Are stable doors more expensive?
As they have extra design features and fittings, stable doors can often cost a little more than regular doors. More importantly, they are often only made from wood or composite, which are among the more expensive door materials.
Can you have a stable door as a front door?
Yes, you could have a stable door as a front door. This would add traditional charm to a period or modern property, giving that cosy cottage look and the added functionality of the split sections.
